Accountability

Nursing & Homemakers Inc. (NHI) will be accountable for participating in effective resource management with the family by establishing clear goals for client treatment plans, and ensuring that those goals are met, and also establishing and implementing effective and appropriate discharge planning with clients.

These Guidelines include specific expectations for teaching, delegating, assigning and supervising. However, there are those that apply to nurses who work with unregulated care providers in  any of these capacities. The nurse who teaches, delegates, assigns or supervises unregulated care providers must:

a)

know that the unregulated care provider is competent to safely perform the particular procedure/activity for the client in the given circumstances. The nurse who teaches or delegates is expected to have first-hand knowledge of the UCP's competence, the nurse who assigns or supervise is expected to know that the UCP's competence has been determined.

b)

Recognize that a nurse or other designated health care professional must be responsible for assessing health care needs on an ongoing basis, developing a plan of care, evaluating the client's condition and the ongoing effectiveness of the intervention (as UCP's do not have the knowledge base to do so.)

c)

Ensure that the UCP understands the extent of his or her responsibilities in performing the procedure (s) ,knows when and whom to ask for assistance, and knows when and how to report the procedure outcomes to the nurse or other designated health care professional.
