Personal Support Worker

Job Description

Education/ Experience:
Health Care Aide Certificate/Personal Support Worker Certificate and or recent working experience

Responsible To:
When providing relief staff or duty care Health Care Aide/ Personal Support Worker works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse/ Charge Nurse of the unit to which he/she is assigned.

Duties:
  • Provide basic health and personal care for each client
  • Provides each client with meaningful companionship, observation, safety and conservation
  • Participates in the rehabilitative approach to patient care
  • Ensures that the client's surroundings and personal effects are clean, tidy and serviceable
  • Performs within the scope of his/her education and experience. This may include but is not limited to the following skills.
  • Positioning in bed/chair
  • Transfer from bed
  • Radial pulse
  • Ambulation
  • Weight
  • Passive/active exercises
  • Feeding
  • artificial respiration
  • collection of non-sterile i.e. urine, stool and sputum
  • oral hygiene
  • care after death
  • bed pan/urinal
  • tub bath/shower
  • Bed bath
  • condom drainage
  • activities of daily living
  • enema
  • intake/output
  • denture care
  • hair washing
  • workplace safety

  • The position description of a Health Care Aide/ Personal Support Worker of Nursing & Homemakers Inc.
  • The policies and practices of the institution of which he/she is assigned.
  • Every Health Care Aide/ Personal Support Worker exercises judgement in accepting tasks and is responsible for his/her actions.
